For many travellers, the allure of history is the beauty of all that it leaves behind. There is rarely a relic that is not magnificent, and Fort Santiago is no different.

The History of Fort Santiago

This is a 16th-century fort that is considered a national treasure in the Philippines. It was won back by colonists and is now considered a shining example of freedom within the nation. If you are visiting and staying at the serviced apartments in Makati such as the Ascott Makati be sure to take some time out of your day to see this landmark.

Architectural style

Many would consider this fort to be of a classical Italian and Spanish origin. It was built by Miguel Lopez de Legaspi in order to complement the newly created Manila city.

A highlight of the Fort

A key feature that many people flock to is the Jose Rizal Museum. It was established in 1896 and is filled with memorabilia that commemorate his life.

Things to know

The Fort is opened daily between the hours of 8 am to 7 pm but it is recommended to arrive in time for the sunset.
