Getting There
This lake can be found in the heart of Kandy near the famed Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic within easy reach of Earl’s Regency. Those based at such a centrally located hotel in Kandy, Sri Lanka, can plan a hassle-free excursion here which can be combined with a visit to the temple and some city exploration.

An Artificial Creation
The Kandy Lake is an artificial creation constructed in 1807 during the rule of King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, the island’s last monarch; the architect of this site was Deveda Moolacharya. The area was earlier home to paddy fields with a pond called “Kiri Muhuda” or “Sea of Milk” and this name was retained for the lake.

Local Legends
There are some fascinating local legends connected to the lake most notably about the small island at its centre; according to some, it was used by the harem of the king for bathing and was linked to the palace by a secret tunnel! Interestingly, the British later used the island to store ammunition and constructed a parapet too.

A Scenic Site
Today, the lake offers a picturesque backdrop amidst the bustling city and one of the best things to do in Kandy is to enjoy a walk around its banks. There are shady paths (mind the crows above!) and a few seats as well; on a stroll, you may spot pelicans, swans, monitor lizards and toque macaques in the surrounding trees.
