What Makes Thonburi Special?

So, why is Thonburi so special to start off with? Well, the answer is in how different it is from the rest of Bangkok. Thailand’s capital city is full of towering skyscrapers, luxurious Bangkok resorts such as the Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort, and bustling crowds. Thonburi on the other hand is a throwback to the city’s past – the last remnants of a once quiet and tranquil Thai town.

Travelling through the Town

You should start off your tour by exploring the more urbanised areas of Thonburi. You’ll notice the locals strolling about, ready to start their days – kids walking hand-in-hand with their parents and Buddhist monks collecting the day’s alms. You’ll also come across a variety of street markets here, they’ll sell everything from snacks and textiles to exotic pets!

The Temples

One thing Thonburi is known for above all else is its temples. In fact, you’ll come across dozens of them as you walk through the streets. Of these, there are two you cannot afford to miss – the 80-metre tall Wat Paknam and the ancient Wak Nak Prok which harbours a magnificent golden statue of the Buddha inside.

Exploring the Canal side

Once the heat of the day dies down, it’s worth taking a stroll along the canals to mingle with the locals. You’ll find most laborers and vendors taking a break here, enjoying either a hot cup of coffee or a cold beer. Don’t be afraid to strike up some conversation, the people of Thonburi tend to be a friendly bunch!
