Ever been curious about ostriches? The next time you are in Johor make sure to visit the Desaru Ostrich Farm where you can learn about and get up close to these long-necked flightless birds!
Planning the Visit
Located in Jalan Teluk Ramunia in the Malaysian state of Johor, this site is about a 90-minute drive from the Johor Bahru Checkpoint. Local properties such as Anantara Desaru Coast Resort & Villas are only around 25 minutes away from the farm which is open from 10:00am to 6:00pm.
At the Desaru Ostrich Farm, you will find caretakers who also act as tour guides and offer fascinating insights. In Desaru, attractions such as these are ideal for a family visit since you can get up close with these birds; apart from feeding a couple of ostriches with corn kernels or veggies, you can take a picture or selfie with them too!
Other Things to Do
You can visit the hatchery at the site where ostrich eggs are incubated; the incubation period is around 40 to 60 days and if you’re lucky, you may even get to see a baby ostrich hatch. The farm also offers ostrich rides monitored by a caretaker which is bound to be a big hit amongst kids.
Dining and Souvenirs
While it may not be to everyone’s liking, one can try ostrich culinary creations here too; ostrich burgers, omelette, satay, teppanyaki, nuggets and more are all on the menu! There is also a shop where you can buy unique ostrich-related souvenirs be it eggshell lamps, wallets, shoes or bags.
