Laos doesn’t get nearly as much attention from backpackers as its neighbours Thailand and Vietnam, but give it a chance and you’ll be pleasantly surprised. If you’re visiting Laos by yourself for the first time, start with Luang Prabang – the ancient capital of the northern Luang Prabang province, where history, nature and culture converge.
Where To Stay
Your best bet is to pick one of the Luang Prabang hotels that are centrally located, so that you have easy access to the city’s main highlights. Consider how much you can afford to spend, but also look for a place that is equipped to keep you comfortable.

Transport from the Airport
Taxis and tuk-tuks are readily available at the Luang Prabang International Airport. If you’ve booked a stay closer to the airport at the likes of Avani+ Luang Prabang Hotel, a walk is also a good option, too. Even an hour’s walk is a great way to stretch your legs, but only if you’ve packed light!
Planning Your Itinerary
There’s plenty to see and do in the city, but make sure to pace yourself. The local temples are must-visits, each featuring interiors detailed with artwork. Make a stop at the Ock Pop Tok Living Crafts Centre to learn more about Laos’ heritage. For a dose of nature, explore the Kuang Si Falls.
What Food to Eat
Sampling street food and local bites at the night market is a great way to get a taste of day-to-day Laotian food. But make sure you have full meals, especially if you plan to be out and about most of the time.
