Oman's Hajar Mountains are made for walkers who like a view with their effort. Add a mountain resort in Oman to rest afterwards, and Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Shams can easily fill a few good days.
Jebel Akhdar: terraces and rim views
Known as the Green Mountain, Jebel Akhdar features walking routes through traditional villages, rose gardens and terraced farmland. Walkers staying nearby, at places such as Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar, can head out early to catch soft light along the rim. Drop-offs are steep, so stick to established paths.
Jebel Shams: the Balcony Walk (W6)
From the village of Al Khitaym, a waymarked path follows the cliffs above Wadi Nakhr, often called Oman’s Grand Canyon, to the abandoned village of As Sab. Allow about three hours return, though even a short stretch has big views.
Jebel Shams: the summit walk (W4)
For something steeper, W4 climbs towards the southern summit at about 2,997 metres. It’s the tougher option, so start early and carry what you need.
Plan before you go
Take plenty of water, wear sturdy shoes and start at sunrise to avoid the midday heat. A 4WD is the safer choice for reaching the Jebel Shams trailheads, and a guide is worth considering on longer routes.
Pace yourself, and let the mountains do the rest.
