Nuwara Eliya is a lovely place for a slow holiday as a couple. The weather is cool, the hills are covered in tea, and there are plenty of stunning places to explore. You can head out for the day or stay inside with a hot drink when the mist rolls in. Don’t try to squeeze too much into the trip, though. Choose a comfortable hotel, plan a few outings and leave time to simply hang out together.

Stay Somewhere with Beautiful Views

What are the best luxury hotels in Nuwara Eliya for romantic holidays? A lot depends on the setting. A hotel among tea fields and misty hills lets you enjoy the scenery even when you have no plans for the day.

Heritance Tea Factory is inside a restored 19th-century tea factory in Kandapola. It stands more than 2,000 metres above sea level and has 50 rooms and suites.

Have a look at the room choices before booking. Superior Rooms overlook the tea plantations, while Executive Floor Deluxe Rooms face the tea-covered mountains. Want a little more space? The Flowerdew Suite has panoramic views, a Jacuzzi and separate areas for living and dining.

Learn a Little About Ceylon Tea

You’ll be surrounded by tea fields, so you may as well find out what goes into your morning cup.

Tea plucking, guided tastings and a mini tea factory tour give you a closer look at the process. You can see how tea is picked, prepared and tasted without sitting through anything too formal. It’s a fun experience to share, and you’ll probably look at that next cup of tea a little differently.

Stage 22 of the Pekoe Trail also passes through the tea country around Kandapola. If you both enjoy walking, spend part of the day exploring the route. Take comfortable shoes and don’t rush. The hills may look gentle from a distance, but your legs could have other ideas.

Make Time for High Tea

High tea feels right at home in Nuwara Eliya. Hot tea, cool weather and a plate of sweet and savoury treats – it’s a pretty good way to spend an afternoon.

Choose a spot with a garden, terrace or hill-country view. Then settle in and take your time. You’re on holiday, after all.

Check the serving hours before you make plans. Some high tea experiences may also need to be booked ahead, especially on weekends or during busy travel periods. You don’t want to turn up ready for cake and find out you’ve missed it.

Walk Around Gregory Lake

Gregory Lake is one of the easiest places to add to a day in Nuwara Eliya. Go for a relaxed walk beside the water, stop for a few photos and enjoy the cooler air. There’s no need to have a big plan.

The lake is close to Nuwara Eliya town, so you can pair your walk with lunch, a little shopping or a visit to Victoria Park. If your hotel is farther out in the tea country, check the driving time before leaving.

Bring a light jacket too. It may be sunny when you set off, but the weather can change rather quickly.

Wander Through Hakgala Botanical Garden

If you both like gardens and quiet walks, set aside a morning for Hakgala Botanical Garden. The paths take you past flower beds, trees and plants that grow well in the cool hill-country climate.

Go early if you want to take your time and avoid feeling rushed. Comfortable shoes are a must, particularly after rain. An umbrella isn’t a bad idea either. Nuwara Eliya weather likes to keep everyone guessing.

You could also pack a few snacks and stop somewhere scenic on the way back. A warm drink and a good view can be more romantic than an afternoon planned down to the last minute.

Turn Dinner into an Experience

You don’t need to head into town every evening. Sometimes the nicest option is staying in, dressing up a little and making dinner part of the night.

If you’re staying at Heritance Tea Factory, TCK 6685 offers something different. The restaurant is set inside a converted railway carriage and fits nicely with the history of the hotel. Kenmare Restaurant is available for a more traditional meal, while Hethersett Bar and Goatfell Bar offer places to sit down with a drink.

Ask about opening hours and reservations early. It’s better than sorting it out when you’re already hungry.

Leave a Little Time Unplanned

A luxury holiday as a couple shouldn’t feel like a race around Nuwara Eliya. Keep a morning free for a late breakfast. Book a spa treatment. Take a short walk, have another cup of tea or stay in your room and enjoy the view.

Make a few plans, but don’t go overboard. Sometimes the best part of a hill-country holiday is having absolutely nowhere else you need to be.
