The temples in this part of Thailand are lovely, but after a day or two of golden spires, you'll want to see what else the city has to offer. Luckily, the list of things to do in Chiang Mai goes well beyond the temples.

Eat your way through the markets

Warorot Market is the place for northern Thai snacks like sai ua sausage and fresh fruit. Go in the morning, when it's busiest, and the food is freshest.

Take a cooking class

Many local cooking classes begin with a market visit, then teach you to make dishes like khao soi. You leave with memories and recipes you can actually cook back home.

See the city from the river

A slow boat ride along the Mae Ping, like the Jao Ping River Cruise from Anantara Chiang Mai Resort, drifts under old bridges and past small riverside temples and lush green landscapes. It's a quieter view of Chiang Mai than the busy streets give you.

Discover the creative side of town

The cafes, galleries and small design boutiques around Nimmanhaemin Road are perfect for slow afternoons. On Sundays, the Walking Street fills Ratchadamnoen Road with local crafts and delicious street food, promising a memorable experience.

Leave a few hours unplanned. Some of the best moments here are the ones nobody scheduled.
