About Bevis

Bevis Bawa, a renowned Sri Lankan artist and landscape architect, once served as an aide-de-camp or personal assistance to four governors of colonial Sri Lanka. He passed away at the age of 83, leaving behind his legacy in the form of Brief Garden, which also inspired his brother to create Lunuganga.

History of the Garden

Brief Garden is believed to be designed by Bawa in his late 60s. It was created upon the land on which his family owned a rubber plantation previously. One may notice a frangipani (araliya) tree at the entrance near the main house, which is known as the first-ever tree to be planted on the premises by Bevis Bawa.

What to Expect

Brief Garden is sprawled over a massive area of 20 acres and it hasn’t undergone any changes after the demise of his creator. One may come across plenty of seats, tucked away in secluded places, allowing visitors to immerse in nature, undisturbed by the outside world.

Artwork

The garden is quite popular for an eclectic range of artwork scattered around the premises including a magnificent mural of Sri Lankan life and homoerotic sculptures.
