While you will be spellbound by the sight of Victoria Falls by day, come the full moon, you can witness a magical lunar rainbow too. Here’s more on what you need to know.

What Exactly Is It?

A lunar rainbow is like a daytime rainbow, the only difference being the light source which is refracted through the air’s water particles is the moon and not the sun. Victoria Falls is one of the few places in the world to see such “moonbows” due to the rising spray created by the cascading water.

Plan the Experience

Ideally, look to be based at hotels in Livingstone, Zambia which are walking distance from Victoria Falls such as the property of Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas. Plan your trip to coincide with a full moon; May to August is generally the optimal period though you can spot lunar rainbows at other times too.

Ideal Conditions

This spectacle can be seen one day before and one day after a full moon as well though there are other factors too; there should be clear skies with no clouds blocking the lunar rays, while the spray from the falls has to be sufficient to reach the moonlight, but not too great to block out the background!

Keep in Mind

Sometimes it’s all about luck when it comes to spotting lunar rainbows and on occasions, it will not be as bright or noticeable as rainbows in the day. That said, witnessing Victoria Falls at night is still an awe-inspiring sight! Have a raincoat or umbrella in case the spray is strong and comfy walking shoes too.
