While Sigiriya Rock Fortress is always associated with Dambulla due to its proximity to the city, Dambulla has many other historical sites to offer. One such sight is the Rangiri Dambulla Cave Temple.
History of the Temple
This temple is a world heritage site and has been a pilgrimage site for over 22 centuries. Thus, if staying at a property such as the Amaya Lake Dambulla, this is one site that you cannot miss. With mural paintings covering an area of 2,100 m2, this is recognised as one of the best-preserved cave temples.
Purchase of Tickets
If you are staying at one of the hotels in Dambulla, Sri Lanka, you may think you can visit the temple anytime you want. However, while the site is open till 7 pm, the ticket counter is only open from 7 am to 5 pm. Therefore make sure to plan your visit accordingly.
Best Time to Visit
Due to the unbearable heat in this area, it is generally advisable to visit the temple in the early morning or evening. Not only is it cooler at this time. But you would also be able to view the sunrise or sunset respectively.
Dress Code
As this is a place of worship, a strict dress code is followed. Thus, visitors are advised to have their knees and shoulders covered. They are also requested to remove their shoes and hats before entering the temple.
