Declaring as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

Declaring Baa Atoll as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve started in 2009. After a series of workshops and meetings, a community consultation occurred the same year. The results of the consultation showed that 95% of the community was in favour of Baa Atoll being declared as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. On 18th June 2011, Baa Atoll was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Under the Ministry of Environment and Energy, the government of Maldives established and opened the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve on the 13th of June 2012.
