Sir Bani Yas Island is an island located about 250 kilometres from Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates. It is just offshore of Jebel Dhanna, that is also a crossing point to several islands. Spanning an area of about eighty seven square kilometres, Sir Bani Yas Island is the largest island in the UAE, and originally housed the biggest wildlife reserve in Arabia. The wildlife reserve was set up by the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan in 1971. Intensive conservation efforts have resulted in the growth of millions of trees, and the once barren island is now a lush paradise where hundreds of birds and animals roam free.

The island and the surrounding waters are home to a rich biodiversity. Visitors will be able to spot everything from the Arabian hare (which is indigenous to the UAE), as well as the Arabian mountain gazelle, cheetah, reticulated giraffe, northern ostrich and the axis spotted deer. One can also find sea turtle, dugong, dolphin as well as a plethora of colourful fish off the island’s coast, though fishing is prohibited within three nautical miles of its shores. However, one can indulge in some snorkelling which is one of the most popular activities here.

Sir Bani Yas Island boasts many terrific activities that will appeal to adventure lovers. Visitors can try their hand at archery, or go kayaking, and explore the island’s rugged beauty. Kayaking also provides an opportunity to observe the birds that flock around the waterways. Mountain biking is another popular activity and is best done at sunrise as the early morning light enhances the island’s natural splendour. Those who want to catch a glimpse of the animals that live here should definitely take a wildlife tour drive.
