Manchester’s first town hall appeared by 1825, tucked away in the edge of Cross Street, and was designed by Francis Goodwin and erected by David Bellhouse. This building was built to house the civic assembly rooms and domestic government during the cities expansion.  The building was 76 feet deep and 134 feet long, with the ground floor containing rooms and offices, notable government officials and regular government employees. However, as the cities textile industry began to flourish, the old building proved obsolete and the new Town Hall was scheduled to be built on Kings Street.

The new Town Hall was built around the style of Gothic architecture and possessed many design elements of that style. Visitors to this grand building will be greeted by the beautifully aged bricks which constitute the majority of the building.  Additionally the low rib vault ceilings and tall arched windows are archetypal features of early English gothic architecture that would allow those who enter the building to enjoy the ambiance of a Victorian era construct. Many of the rooms are decked with grand stained glass windows whilst a few contain windows with only a light tinting to allow as much sunlight from the dreary Manchester sky to seep through. Currently, this building can be employed by citizens for personal usage such as balls, galas, weddings, family functions etc. Visitors would have to present their ID’s at the reception so as to ensure better customer service and to maintain security. The Town Hall is also one of the first five administrations to achieve World Class Service status for its exemplary standards in customer service.
