Most of us have had that moment in our often busy lives where we are just overwhelmed with work, responsibilities and stress; enough to make you want to scream! At those times when the weight of the world seems baring down on you, sometimes it is the little things like just taking a deep breath that gives you some clarity and peace of mind, even for just a short time. This seemingly simple process, when used and channeled properly is in fact an excellent method for stress reduction. It is something that is rooted in ancient traditions too; when it comes to traditional Ayurveda Sri Lanka has to offer, mindful breathing is part of the process of finding holistic healing and if you are visiting this island nation then Jetwing Ayurveda Pavilions is one such place where you can work on these techniques.

So what exactly is mindful breathing? Well simply put, it is being aware of your breath. Sounds easy enough, but it actually requires practice and concentration, especially for those of us who are used to “life on the go”. According to the findings of Jon Kabatzinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) treatment is indeed beneficial and while the study mainly focused on women, the benefits of this activity undoubtedly will help men as well.

How does one go about mindfully breathing? Ideally find a quiet place and sit on a chair with both feet on the ground. Focus attention on your position and then gradually channel your thoughts on the act of breathing; the way in which the breath you take flows through your body from the nose to the lungs and then when you breathe out, the way in which the breath leaves your body. You may have external thoughts entering your mind, threatening to destroy your concentration. At these times just relax, and shift your focus back again on your breathing. Alternatively you can also try this “exercise” while on bed and it can in fact help you sleep as well. Start off with trying mindfully breathing for around five minutes a day and then increase the time gradually. You will soon find yourself becoming more relaxed and stress reducing as well.
