Colombo, the commercial capital of Sri Lanka is the kind of city where you can enjoy the very best of what this enchanting island has to offer. But if you have limited time to spend in the city while on your Sri Lanka tours, then you need to choose wisely on what exactly to add to your Colombo itinerary.

Sightseeing is, of course, a top requirement, especially for first-time visitors. Make sure you plan a visit to Pettah, a multicultural melting pot of sights and sounds. Famous for its market and the countless shops and street side stalls where one can purchase all manner of goods, the locale is always bustling with energy. For a truly unique way to explore the area, use a local tuk-tuk (three-wheeled vehicle) to get around. Some tour operators like Walkers Tours even have special tuk-tuk tours with English speaking drivers.

Colombo is also known for having quite an eclectic foodie culture and going on a food tour should also be on your agenda. Just like the many communities that make up the Sri Lankan population, the food too is diverse. Kottu roti is a popular street food with many street side eateries offering this dish containing chopped up slices of rotti, stir-fried with a variety of ingredients be it eggs, spices, vegetables or meats. Make sure you try typical rice and curry too though it can be on the extremely spicy side if you are not used to it! Of course, you also get plenty of cafes in Colombo where you can enjoy different varieties of coffee and other beverages along with some wonderful desserts.

Combine recreation with some sightseeing by visiting some of these popular sites; Independence Square features a beautifully designed memorial hall with plenty of space surrounding it for jogging and cycling, while Galle Face Green is a great place to unwind by the sea with family and friends. You can always indulge in some shopping at either of the two main malls in the city or at one of the popular boutiques or department stores.

Of course, there is much more to do in Colombo and part of the fun is to make these discoveries on your own!
