The historic Spanish style 686 seat Pasadena Play House built in 1924 to house the city’s first drama troupe was a community effort to develop cultural activity in Southern California. By the time it was voted the official state theatre in 1937, it not only had several remarkable classical and other stage productions to its credit but had expanded to include a College of Theatre Art which produced a spate of well known theatre and movie actors till the 1960s. It also premiered several new plays by famed US and international playwrights. At one time it was also the most prolific theatrical organization in the world and was one of the first companies to experiment with new theatrical forms and connected stage techniques. It also operated one of the first TV stations in Southern California. However in 1969 the theatre went bankrupt and was able to open its doors again only in 1985. Restructured in 2010 it continues to lead cultural activity in the region with presentation of new works and diverse cultural and theatrical programs.

The theatre committed to providing new and exciting theatrical experiences in Southern California showcases several new works and revivals and produces more than 300 theatrical entertainments a year. It continues to enjoy its preeminent positions as the State Theatre of California. The 2012 – 2013 theatrical season promises to provide some fresh experiences with the launch of several new productions that will go on to Broadway. In the past the theatre has premiered several musicals that went on to become much acclaimed productions on Broadway. During the successful 2012 season it won several regional awards that included the award for the Best Dramatic Theatre and the best Live Theatre.

Some of the theatre’s exciting new programs include Hot House at the Playhouse started in 2005 to act as a laboratory for playwrights to develop and produce new plays through interactions with the audience, actors, writers and directors.
