The Gallery of Modern Art is an art gallery located in Glasgow, Scotland. Opened in 1996 it has quickly become the country’s most widely visited gallery for modern art. The gallery is housed inside the former townhouse of William Cunninghame of Lainshaw, a rich local who made most of his money from the lucrative tobacco business.

Since it was built the townhouse has served multiple purposes. It was used by the Royal Bank of Scotland as its headquarters in 1817 before the bank shifted to Buchanan Street. It underwent numerous renovations between 1827 and 1832 so that it could be used as the Royal Exchange. The Stirling’s Library was moved into the building in 1954. Once the library was restored to Miller Street the building was renovated to house the city’s collection of contemporary art.

The gallery is one of the most popular attractions in Glasgow and has welcomed millions of guests throughout the years. Included in the gallery’s collection are works by renowned international artists such as Andy Warhol, Sebastiao Salgado, David Hockney as well as popular local ones such as Ken Currie and John Bellany. This is the ideal place to go to get an idea of local art and is a ‘must visit’ for all art lovers.

The gallery is open from 10 am to 5pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, with the timings varying on other days. Those interested on visiting the modern art gallery can find more information on opening hours at the gallery’s official website.
